A Class Of Their Own: The lecture as performance art

What makes a lecture special?

“There’s nothing like a live performance,” says NUS Engineering’s Professor Seah Kar Heng. “My classes are so entertaining they don’t sleep.” And so for one and a half hours, he holds the full attention of

his students, imparting engineering wisdom that many of them remember for years after.

Titian Naluri: Connecting the Past and the Present in Malay Dance

The values of a culture are embodied (literally and figuratively) in its dance forms and for most societies all over the world, dance is one of the most important expressions of their world view. Dance distils both historical and current cultural values. Societies create dances and through dance and movement forms, gender is defined and illuminated, personal and group identities are forged and political and religious status and aesthetic value are defined at different points of time.

The Issue of ‘Face’ as an Obstacle to Participation in Group Projects, and How to Improve Group Dynamics in an Asian Context

When I ask students how they feel about group projects, they often give a negative response because of bad experiences with problematic groupmates, such as free-riders who do not contribute, or members who bulldoze their ideas through while disregarding their peers.

After many semesters of mediating disputes among group mates, I have found that many of these issues stem from concerns about saving ‘face’. This leads to a lack of much-needed communication.

Blended Learning 2.0 at NUS

Blended learning is not new. NUS teachers have been using blended learning as a teaching strategy over many years.

Despite the challenges of COVID-19, NUS was able to continue in our educational mission, through thoughtful use of online learning and assessments. It is likely that, as the situation improves to a “new normal”, we will continue to leverage on online or hybrid learning to help improve student learning outcomes. Being mindful of the different needs of our teachers and students, we have launched the Blended Learning 2.0 (BL 2.0) initiative.

This BL2.0 resource will guide colleagues as they think about designing and implementing blended learning modules.

How to Effectively Induct Students into the Flipped Classroom Paradigm

The flipped classroom format is a type of blended learning where students are required to do some preparatory work – such as watching lecture videos or completing some assignments – before coming to a face-to-face class to work on more challenging problems with the facilitation of an instructor.

How to Design Unforgettable and Satisfying Learning Activities that Help Students Learn Better

One of the interesting topics that arise when I converse with students is how many of them struggle to remember what they did in modules from previous semesters.
Such discussions got me thinking about how to design learning activities that are unforgettable. There is a quote famously attributed to Albert Einstein who said that “education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learnt in school”. And I want to ensure that my students remember what they have learned from me especially after all the hard work that they have put into my course.
